UNTIL ALL ACHIEVE WELL-BEING

Welcome to the Sunday, September 26, 2004 issue of this Peace&Justice action email!

In this issue, there is opportunity for further response to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan. As noted in the previous email, while in general each email deals with separate topics, I have made an exception with Darfur, partly because it would be such an indictment on our global dynamics and sense of humanity if we respond no better to Darfur than we did to Rwanda 10 years ago, even setting aside differences in context. There are many people trying to elevate our response and I want to support those efforts. That said, we will likely remain somewhat hamstrung until we as an international community can restructure ourselves (the U.N, etc), of which there are emerging some proposals (a future email).

Secondly, there is opportunity to voice concerns over the handling of our oceans - specifically the way our ocean floors are being devastated by bottom-trawling.

ASK UN FOR MORATORIUM ON OCEAN BOTTOM TRAWLING

What goes on under our oceans is largely hidden from view. Living as I do on the West coast of Canada, I am acutely aware of alarm bells ringing - those with substance as well as those containing much uncertainty - regarding our world fish stocks and general health of our oceans. One well-hidden aspect is that of bottom trawling, where large mechanisms scrape clean the bottom of the ocean floor. The damage, if not irreparable and if not killing off species, could take generations to repair.

Greenpeace, along with many other Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs), have jointly called on the UN General Assembly to: "adopt a resolution declaring an immediate moratorium on high seas bottom trawling and to simultaneously initiate a process under the auspices of the UN General Assembly...". For further information, including a video of what bottom trawling does, and to take action, follow the links below:
