Welcome to the Sunday, August 27, 2006 issue of this Peace&Justice action email!
This email maintains a focus on Darfur, plus visits again the issue of deep-sea destruction. In addition it highlights a hopeful endeavour related to the 5th anniversary of 9/11, and also contains a US-only action regarding their election process.
______________________________________________________DARFUR: FINAL PUSH FOR UN PEACEKEEPING
On Saturday September 17, around the world, rallies will be held in support of ending the atrocities in Darfur. As mentioned in the last email, media coverage comes and goes on the subject. But right now even CNN has reported how violence, including the rape of women, has again increased (see their link below). So please consider signing the petition below. Also check to see if a rally is being held in your area, and if not consider doing something, even holding a small vigil and wearing blue berets or hats (to signify the need for UN troops - it will be a unifying symbol of the rallies). US citizens can also sign a 2nd petition below.
Sign petition (it is country-specific) and for more information:

CNN on Increase in Violence:
Almost two years ago an action alert was given here to help stop deep-sea trawling due to the indiscriminate and perhaps irreversible damage done. After two years of governments promising to take "urgent action" to protect deep sea life, nothing has happened, despite the advice of almost 1500 scientists from 69 countries, NGOs, a growing number of countries and now the UN itself. So you can click the link below to send an editable email to your country's government:
____________________________________________________FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 - HOPEFUL DIRECTIONS
While this doe not contain an action, I wanted to raise awareness of how the 9/11 tragedy has become a catalyst from some of those directly affected by it, to step back and recognize the need to break the cycles of violence. See the following link for this hopeful endeavour:
___________________________________________________US-ONLY: TOWARDS CLEAN ELECTIONS
The US has a long legacy of democracy. Yet there also exists a cynicism about the current election dynamics. The following action comes from US citizens who have taken steps to help address current weaknesses, in this case the problem of electoral financing and the possibility of special interest concerns buying votes. By enacting a system of public financing for elections the attempt is to cut the ties between politicians and the big-money special interests and lobbyists who currently fund their campaigns. It's called Clean Elections, it's already working in seven states and two cities across the US, and it's on the ballot in California this November!
You can click the link below to tell Congress to enact real campaign reform by passing the Clean Money, Clean Elections Act.
